Mika dela Cruz’s desire for career growth pushed her to transfer to GMA-7 in 2016

It’s safe to say that 19-year-old actress Mika dela Cruz practically grew up in ABS-CBN. Her showbiz career began when she joined the reality talent search program “Star Circle Quest Kids.” Eventually, she landed a gig on the kiddie gag show “Goin’ Bulilit.”

Throughout her Kapamilya career, Mika dela Cruz was paired with her “Goin’ Bulilit” batchmates Nash Aguas, Andre Garcia and Aaron Junatas. Her ABS-CBN stint mainly involved special appearances and a handful of lead roles. Nothing to write home about, if we’re being honest.

This supposed stagnation of her young career forced to take a look at her professional trajectory. When she turned 18, she decided to try something new in the hopes that it would fuel her career growth. This was what pushed her to move to GMA-7 in 2016.

Upon jumping ship, the teen actress’ fans were understandably surprised. She clarified in an interview with Philippine Entertainment Portal (PEP) that she had no ill will towards her former network.

“Hindi po ako pinabayaan, hindi sa hindi ako masaya. Kasi never naman akong nawalan ng work sa ABS, inaalagaan naman nila ako. Tsaka lahat naman ng project na ibinigay nila sa akin, laging maganda at challenging yung role.”

Mika added that she discussed her plans to leave ABS-CBN with Kapamilya management. She also mentioned that she even personally met with the network’s executives to let them know about her plans to jump ship.

“Sobrang okay po, nagpaalam po ako. Ni-release po ako nang maayos. Yes, of course. Siyempre ayoko namang mag-burn ng bridges. Pero nagpaalam ako nang maayos kay Ms. Mariole [Alberto], kay Mr. M [Johnny Manahan]. Dinalaw ko sila, nagpaalam ako nang maayos. And actually, nung nagpaalam ako, alam na nila. Alam na nila yung balak namin and sabi naman nila kung saan ako maggu-grow. And then, anytime na gusto kong bumalik, always welcome naman sila. So, wala pong naging problema, wala kaming problema.”

Today, sky’s the limit for Mika dela Cruz. Here’s hoping she made the right decision.
