Some girls are naturally confident as a product of their upbringing. Unfortunately, there are many women who base their confidence solely on their looks. Such was the story of this girl who only gained confidence after she had jaw surgery.
Ellie Jones was born with a facial deformity that caused her jaw to stop growing at age eight. She thought that the only problem she had was her misaligned teeth which is why she decided to go to a dentist to get them fixed.
When she went to have braces fitted at age 14, her orthodontist Joy Hickman discovered her condition. Dr. Hickman then advised Ellie to undergo surgery to fix her jaw. For six years, maxillofacial surgeon Emma Woolley from Glan Clwyd Hospital in Rhyl, Wales worked hand-in-hand with Dr. Hickman to transform Ellie’s face.

Ellie had her first operation at the age of 16. 4 years later, 20-year-old Ellie has a fully reconstructed jaw and a new outlook in life.
However, she recalled the difficult process she went through to get her jaw fixed. She said:
“It was really painful but had to be done to sort the problem. I was on a liquid diet for about a month, which was really hard, and I couldn’t talk properly – I had to use a notepad to communicate. After a while I was able to mumble a few words and I had a lisp for a while due to how swollen my mouth was.”
Surgeons had to cut Ellie’s jaw both horizontally and vertically. They also had to perform extensive surgery on her underdeveloped chin. Still, she is very thankful for the efforts of the doctors who performed the operations.

Due to their hard work, Ellie finally has the confidence she has been sorely lacking for the majority of her life. She stated:
“I mostly just felt relieved – I finally felt like I could be myself. I was shy but now I feel really confident. It’s changed my whole life.”
Dr. Woolley revealed that Ellie’s condition is a lot more common than you think. She said:
“A lot of people don’t actually realize they have a jaw deformity and just accept that they have difficulties biting. By not treating it at a young age, it can cause real difficulties later in life.”
For now, Ellie dreams of being a professional photographer.
